What your estimated TOEFL band means

The redesigned 2026 TOEFL iBT reports a band from 1 to 6 per section, and an overall band that is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. If you last checked a 0–120 total, this is how the two line up, using ETS's published comparison.

BandComparable old totalLevelTypically enough for
6.0118+AdvancedAny programme with a TOEFL requirement
5.5110+Advanced (C1+)Competitive graduate programmes
5.0100+Upper-intermediateMost universities' standard requirement
4.590+Upper-intermediate (B2)Many undergraduate programmes
4.080+IntermediateLower-threshold and foundation programmes
3.565+Intermediate (B1)Below most university thresholds
3.0 and belowUnder 65ElementaryNeeds sustained work before test day

Bands are ranges, not single points: Band 5.0 covers roughly 100–109 on the old total and Band 5.5 covers 110–117. Always check the exact requirement your university publishes for the 2026 format.

Is this an official TOEFL score?

No. Only ETS issues official scores. This is a free estimate from a short diagnostic — it is designed to tell you where you stand today and which skill to attack first, not to replace the real exam. Because the diagnostic is short, expect your result to move by half a band or so as you practise.

How to improve the band you get

Work on your weakest section first — the overall band is the average of four, so a single weak skill drags the whole score down more than small gains elsewhere lift it. The diagnostic names that section and the task types inside it, so your first week of practice is decided for you.

Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. There is no signup form — you start the diagnostic and see your estimated band at the end. You only add login details if you want your history kept across devices.

How long does it take?

About 10 minutes. It is a short diagnostic, not a full mock — the real 2026 TOEFL iBT runs about two hours.

How accurate is the score?

Reading and Listening are auto-scored; Speaking and Writing are graded by AI against the published ETS criteria for the 2026 exam. It is an estimate, so treat it as a starting point rather than an official score.

Is it really free?

Yes — the diagnostic, the AI grading inside it and your study plan cost nothing. Unlimited practice and mock tests are $39.90/month, $74.90 every 3 months or $99.90/year.

Which sections are covered?

All four — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — using short forms of the real 2026 task types.

Can I take it again?

Yes. Retake it after a few weeks of practice to see how much your estimated band has moved.
